The beach is nice, not the cleanest in the world but it is one of the worlds most famous beaches, so how clean could it be with millions each year using it. There are a lot of shops and stalls along the road running parallel to the beach for almost as far as the eye can see. We walked from just north of the Santa Monica pier all the way to Venice beach, nice walk but quite a long way.
